Cultural Relativism vs. Diversity

Cultural Relativism vs. Diversity

Cultural differences have been both a blessing and a curse to this country. While diverse cultural values highlight the beauty and rich cultural identity of the country, these factors have also been used to draw sharp divisions among ethnic groups. It is sad to note that we often tend to judge other people on the basis of our cultural values, cultural relativism. However, this is a wrong trend and great the risks of tainting the diversity and rich cultural heritage of the Americans.

Inequalities in the USA

It is undisputed that human actions or words come with the ability to derail or propel society to prosper.  Matters related to culture are complex and often influence our relations with one another. There is thus the need to ask questions such as

  • How can we empower other people?
  • Do our actions contribute to their suffering or infringement of their rights?

 Racial Violence

I believe that we can all relate with Fellow Sanford, his artistic work and events that prompt his paintings and sculptures.  While we don’t often talk about racial violence, I hope that we can transcend before this trend and contribute to the well-being of one another. Racial violence is an illustration of our inability to tolerate cultural diversity and differences.

Minority Groups in the USA

While racial discrimination does not just affect the members of the minority groups, historical events infer that they are a vulnerable group. After going through Fellow Sanford’s work, I was shocked to learn the dark history of African-Americans. The violence against the group has been in existence for more than 500 years. It is our duty to ask questions like

  • What has contributed to the continued discrimination on the group
  • How can we better engage with one another to address race problems in the country?

Racial Discrimination

It is sad to note that government agencies such as the police force have in the past been found to infringe on the rights of minority groups. We have all heard stories of police brutality and shooting of African-Americans. Implicit bias and mainstream stereotypes like the association of the group is to blame for this trend. Not only are such stereotypes misleading, but they also infringe on the rights of the concerned persons.

What Can We Learn from Rowling’s Life

I believe that there is much that we can borrow from J.K. Rowling’s commencement speech at Harvard.  In her words, she explains that we can choose to use our status and positions to raise our voices for persons who have no voice. There is a need to identify with both the powerless and the powerful. Not only will such actions make our families happy, but they will also contribute to the betterment of the lives of millions of people.

Changing the World

Changing the world and making our societies better does not require any magic. On the contrary, we have all the powers we would ever need to transform society. Through reflecting on past incidences and interactions with other people, we can come up with better policies and measures to address racial violence. However, this can only be attained by being selfless and exhibiting a greater understanding of other people’s way of life.

The setting of Individual Goals

When framing individual goals, it is necessary to think of other people and ways that the targets may contribute to the improvement in their quality of life. The current setting indicates that there racial and ethnic lines that destabilize American society. Hope theory addresses ways that people can form positive goals that lead to both personal fulfillment and transformation of society.

What is our connection with the World

Despite the different skin colors, political ideologies and goals, the human being ethnosphere is interconnected. These interconnections exceed geographical borders, racial lines, political ideologies, and other differences. If this is the case, why do we engage in regular conflicts, discrimination, and infighting? Intolerance is cancer in American society and eats the very basics of the American social fabric. While we may not like or understand other group’s way of life, there is the central need to give them the right to exercises their values.

So What Can We Do To Address the Racial Violence Problem?

While there are diverse ways through which we can deal with the problem, I believe that understanding and respecting other people’s way of life can address the issues. It is a shift from cultural relativism which is the judging or evaluation of different cultural values on the basis of one’s culture.
