1 Role of clients in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the human feelings and behaviors. The therapist process is a collaborative process between the client and the therapist. The collaborative process aims to learning the clients’ goals and help them realize these objectives. A good working relationship is an essential aspect of a successful therapy session. The role of the client is critical in an effective therapeutic relationship. Clients’ part is indispensable in assisting the therapists in helping the client realize his objectives. They have a role of being actively involved in the therapeutic process from the beginning to the end. Clients have the obligation of cooperating with the therapist in carrying out therapeutic activities both in sessions and outside therapy sessions.
2 Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Christianity
CBT has been widely used in the modern psychology and is an expansion of behaviorism. However, there has been contrasting information regarding the therapy and Christian’s point of view. For instance, the theory firmly believes that beliefs affect the human behavior. This is in perspective with biblical teachings. The Bible teaches humans about the importance of guarding our thoughts. The Bible regards Satan as the father of lies and insists on an importance of cognitive behavior.
Nevertheless, there are some instances of the CBT that are in conflict with Christian teachings. The theory is bases in naturalism and fails to recognize the concept of God. Christians believes that they exist from the supernatural power of God. CBT assumes that humans are capable of self-salvation and fails to recognize the role of Holy Spirit in changing their behavior. Human behavior only changes as an intervention of the Holy Spirit and not as a result of self-evaluation.
2 Reality therapy in marriage counseling
Reality therapy that is based in the choice theory has been applied in different areas. The therapy is positive and has a simple approach that has made it widely used in marriage counseling. Marriage counselors have adopted this strategy in helping couples find better ways of fulfilling their needs. The therapeutic process is critical in enabling the clients understand difficult situations faced in their marriage life. Sensitivity and empathy are evident aspects in the therapeutic process thus making marriage counseling an authentic process. The model gives the couples an opportunity to express their needs and desires that help determine peaceful co-existence of the couple. The model is also applicable to other family counseling and also in education where a personal connection between the therapist and the client is guaranteed.
4 Reality Therapy and Christianity
This therapy is based on the choice theory that asserts that individuals have inherent needs that include, power, survival, achievement love, and belonging. Christians have opposing views regarding the application of the model in modern counseling. For instance, Christians believes in the sense of belonging and that humans have needs. Humans were created for relationships and believed that they belong to God. The Bible also reminds Christians to love one another and have happiness in the house of God.
However, there are some instances of the therapy that does not augur well with Christianity. The emphasis on humans needs by the theory dismays Christians. The Bible teaches Christians to trust in God for Him to meet them at their points of needs. Christians should pursue their needs in a Godly way, but the theory fails to assign limits in how such needs will be met.
