The battle to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission has been the efforts of the United States. In the year 2018, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted sharply increased by about 3.4%. It was the second highest annual gain as compared to the year 2010. There have been successful efforts in the reduction of the gas emission from 2015 to 2017, but a sharp increase appeared last year.

The sharp increase was due to the three sectors of the economy. First, the transportation sector is the largest source of carbon dioxide in the United States. Although there has been a decline in the demand for fuel by the vehicles, a sharp increase was depicted due to the increased demand for diesel for trucks and jet fuel. The buildings too have been another contributing factor. The unusually cold weather that started at the beginning of the year caused the increase of the CO2 emission. Lastly, the industrial sector to has also been mainly contributed to the emissions gain.

From the figure in the report, the data makes me worry about the effects of increased emissions. Such a level of discharge possesses a threat in other sectors of the economy. For instance, the United States sometimes experience the expansion of ocean water and flooding results. Therefore, such emission signals the threats of flooding of the coastal states as well as the high cost of decarbonization. Some efforts could help reduce carbon emissions. These include shifting to renewable energy such as wind, solar and natural gas. Introduction of the electric vehicles could help in reducing the dependency of the transport sector on diesel.
