Introduction
This article examines the importance of management information systems and how the business intelligence and new technology aids in the cross-sectional coordination of various departments in an organization (Skyrius, Kazakevičienė & Bujauskas, 2013). The article also explores social media and how an organization can utilize it for competitive advantage in the global stage. The purpose of the article is to show the transition from traditional information management to modern ways of information management as characterized by a cross-sectional business enterprise. Again the article shows the shift from the management information system to business intelligence as advanced technology has taken over as manifested through various internet platforms
The most critical aspects of the article involve the management information systems used to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. Examples of the systems include Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), etc. ERP harmonize communication platforms to form a common channel from which both internal and external stakeholders communicate conveniently. ERP consolidates business processes and functions. Whereas the SCM aims to streamline sourcing and procurement processes. Generally, the article shows that business becomes successful only through well-informed business if it keeps updates of the development in the business environment. Again, technology does not guarantee better decision making but the availability of the right information in real-time and right place. Business intelligence supports rapid business decision making.
