Introduction
The human race is faced with numerous challenges in their daily lives. Nevertheless, the human population has been gaining inspiration from nature over the years thus making the concept of biomimicry a popular subject. It is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies (“What Is Biomimicry? – Biomimicry Institute”, 2016). In other words, biomimicry refers to the conscious emulation of life’s genius (Hutchins, 2013). For instance, the issue of global warming and increased levels of pollution have made it necessary to explore nature and solve the challenge through sustainable practices. Biomimicry has been widely used in the modern society to offer a solution to the different challenges that face the current population.
Biomimicry and sustainability
As aforementioned, the human race is exploring the nature to solve their major challenges that arise in their daily lives. Although the human race acknowledges the existence of numerous challenges, it is also evident that nature has solved a good number of these problems. For instance, the issue of ‘’greenhouse’’ gas has been a major challenge in the modern society (“Let’s reverse climate change together :: Biomimicry 3.8”, 2016). Several human activities have increased the amount of carbon dioxide gasses emitted to the environment. These gasses have been considered a big challenge and people are determined to deal with the issue. Nevertheless, carbon dioxide has other useful purposes in its natural state. For instance, carbon dioxide is viewed as a building block as it is used by plants to make sugars, starches, and cellulose. Carbon is also essential in the building of coral reefs as well as the mollusks shells. As a result, the human race has been proactive in ensuring that carbon emissions are used for such important natural roles (“What Is Biomimicry? – Biomimicry Institute”, 2016). There has been increased sensitization on the importance of reducing production of carbon dioxide through the use of renewable energy.
It is important to understand that there are several relationships in the ecosystem that can help solve the numerous challenges facing the world population. Cells, organisms, and their ecosystems are continually sensing and responding to each other, and humans are inventing ways of solving their problems naturally. What may have seemed like competitive or selfish relations between one organism and another, when viewed within the wider context can be seen as fostering resilience at the ecosystem level, which benefits the whole and the parts (“Let’s reverse climate change together :: Biomimicry 3.8”, 2016). For instance, humans have been able to reduce air pollution through processes such as thermal oxidation and adsorption. Nevertheless, these processes are quite expensive and thus make it necessary to solve the problem through the natural self-cleaning process (Hutchins, 2013). Earth’s atmosphere cleans itself when polluting gasses plus sunlight plus naturally occurring ozone cause the pollutants to clump together as particles, which can then be washed out in the next rain.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, the human race is faced with numerous natural challenges. Although there are relentless efforts to solve these problems, it is evident that most of these problems are already solved by nature. The various relations and nature interplays have solved a majority of these problems, especially matters of pollution. When we look at what is truly sustainable, the only real model that has worked for long periods of time is the natural world thus making biomimicry a lasting solution to human problems.
