Big Boy Leaves Home is a short story under the book Uncle Tom’s children written by Richard Wright. The main characters of the story areBobo, Buck, Lester, and Big Boy. In the story, there came a time when the boys had to leave their status quo of their normal life. This occurred when they played hooky in school and decided to go swimming on their way home. The place they chose to go and swim at was a pool that belonged to a man called Harvey who had warned passersby from entering the pool by a big banner saying NO TRESPASSIN(Wright 33). Before they descended into the underground one of the obstacles they faced was that of a woman who came to the place they were swimming. As they scrambled for their clothes to run away, the woman started screaming and her husband Jim appeared with a gun. He started shooting at them where eventually Lester and Buck were killed while Big Boy and Bobo attacked Jim.
The point at which the main characters entered an unfamiliar underground world was when they were able to dispossess the gun from Jim and eventually killed him making them fugitives. The story narrates that “the man stopped, blinked and spat blood” (Wright 39). Since they were blacks, they already knew that the dominant whites of the region would come looking for them for vengeance. Several difficulties are encountered there where they are forced to flee their home, Big Boys home is torched down, and Bobo is also killed through being burnt to death. According to the book, many associations with death are evident as the story goes by. The first deaths were those of the young Lester and Buck who were killed by Jim through the shootings. Secondly, Big Boy and Bobo managed to take the gun and killed Jim instantly. Later as Big Boy was in hiding Bobo was killed by the whites who caught up with him.
Every happening that takes place in the story is a learning experience, and Big Boy gets to learn that he is one of the luckiest people in their community and amongst his peers who all were killed. About the world, he gets to learn how unfair it is and thought that it was high time that everyone should be treated equally regardless of their skin color. The point at which Big Boy reemerges or gets resurrected is when he escapes death while hiding in the kilns (Wright 59). From there he is picked up by Will who rescues him, and together they start driving towards the north. A lot has changed to his entire life where he will never be able to get back to his normal life. He is also separated from his family members and his community and will forever spend his life running like a fugitive.
