Assignment 2

Culture is merely the way people live and conduct themselves. It involves different aspects such as languages, beliefs, traditions, customs and values that are specific to a particular group of people. Culture reflects their history and a manner in which individuals put across their creativity and ideas. From the paper, culture determines the quality of life that they live and how successful a community can be. Through culture, people can develop a feeling of belonging to a particular place while interacting and relating to each other. Each culture has its traits and is identified with all people that practice it (Mumford). He states that “Being the only Native American in her school also means always being different” (Mumford). This is an indication that identifies American culture to be strong and influential.Art is used to creating and enhance culture in a society. Also, art organizations and other learning institutions are important in preserving culture for future generations (Raibleand Nieto 146). The author states “after that, I went to a high school in Canada, learned English and Canadian culture.” To understand the culture of a place, you can just visit their museums, attend their schools or interact in their daily activities. Culture plays a major role in the general wellness of the society, learning processes and social development.

From the interview, Mumford describes identity as qualities, expressions, looks, and beliefs that make a particular group or person. The article adds that identity is always influx regardless of whether they are adults or children (Nieto 129). Identity is specific to a person and only categorizes them. , and it is the primary attribute that is used to identify them. The individuality of the author has, however, changed as he grew while he was moving from one place to another acquiring new culture and practices. He has acquired a fresh identity in the process. He states that “However, he was changed before and after studying abroad…” Identity evolves as one develops and experience new things in life. It includes aspects that a person has no power to change such as their skin color and place of birth. It also depends on the choices such individuals make such as where they are going to study and live. The author states “When he lived in the US, he could meet relatively many Latin American and experience the Caucasian culture.” Identity can, at some point, be demonstrated by what a person wears and how they interact with their friends. His personality is Korean because he was born in Korea and has been able to acquire Hungarian and American characters as well due to education.

He has lived in a different social context to varying stages of his life. A social context represents the specific environment in which either a person lives, studies or work. The author has been able to live and interact in different settings. He was born and brought up in a Korean social context being able to learn the Korean cultures. He states “I was born in Incheon in 1994 and my parents are both Korean.” He has also lived in Hungary, Philippines and United States.  Social context determines a person’s language. Since Korean dialect is his primary language, the author can communicate fluently through it. He has spent a lot of time in the US during his studies and has, therefore, learned how to speak English. Thus, social context influences both the culture and identity of a person.
