My relationship to writing and reading has been somewhat mixed. In this case, I will commence by examining the reading part. During my early days, I was amused by reading. At a young age, I would easily read a whole book (kid’s books). I remember at some point I would literally beg my parents to let me stay up some minutes past bedtime just to ensure I have completed reading a certain section. I was interested in different books ranging from thrillers to fairytales. By the time I had reached mid-teens, I realized that the options for the books that I could read were somewhat limited compared to those of younger children. In this process, I now found myself choosing between adult books that were difficult to understand and children’s books that I thought to be silly and patronizing. The lack of choice ultimately resulted in reading less and less.
While in high school, now the only books that I could read were the ones being assigned in the English class. Most of the times I was not enthusiastic with the choices that the teachers were giving. Trying to analyze the books with regards to things like themes or symbolism made it less interesting to me. However, perception about reading has changed yet again while in the university. I am now interested since I have realized the amount of knowledge that one can immerse while reading hence making it possible to converse while other people are talking about something.
When it comes to writing, my relationship has been that of ups and downs. While in elementary school my writing was just basic. I liked writing at this point since it gave me the ability to put my imagination into reality. Most of the stories that I would write in school were based on movies that I had watched previously. The best narrative that always intrigued me was that of being the “good guy” and catching up with the “bad guy” at the end.
However, by the time I was in high school, writing was not my cup of tea. It was no longer fictional and fun. Now there was more about doing research, analysis and usage of facts. The element of creativity was now non-existent. I had to adjust to fit in this form of writing, but my passion had diminished since now I did not have the opportunity to continue with my storytelling attributes. While in college, I am yet to get back the passion. However, I now have to adapt since there is a lot of writing that is going on here. The assignments are significant, and without appropriate writing skills, it might be difficult to actualize good grades.
My notions about reading and writing have grown even further after joining the university. I have realized there is a difference between learning to read and write in college and learning to read and write in high school. In high school, learning to read and write is more centered on the teachers. It is the teachers who are in control of everything. They take the initiative of teaching what the students ought to do in order to become good readers and writers. This is something that is embraced by most teachers, even the ones that do not teach language modules. They give out the relevant resources and are keen to follow up on the progress. This is not the same thing when it comes to college. In college, learning to read and write is more of necessitated by the need to have these abilities. People have to learn on their own since this is not something that the tutors are looking forward to teach. As students tackle assignments from different courses, they have to learn on their own how to read and write appropriately. As the students undertake more and more assignments, they become accustomed, and as a result, they become proficient with regards to reading and writing as they progress.
I now understand that reading and writing are important elements for my education. This is because I need to understand and comprehend something while reading so that I am aware of what is required of me. When it comes to writing, I also need to have adequate skills of expressing my points for tutors to understand whatever I am trying to put across. Another important thing that I have learned is that for someone to become a good writer, they should have adequate reading skills. It is through reading that one will have an idea of what to write and how to write it. It is also good to note that learning to read is more of a life-long process. People develop knowledge regarding what they will use to read from the early interactions that they have with communities and families. This goes on up to the college level.
