Art for the Talented

In the manifesto, How to be an Artist, Saltz points out that Art is for anyone and not everyone (Saltz par. 1). Art is a creative skill which requires imagination at a higher level. Not everyone is ready to get tired or take the risk in higher imagination level. Saltz, therefore, is right by saying that it is not for everyone but only to those who are ready to pay the price. However, it is not everyone who is gifted in creativity and imagination in arts. Take, for example, some students in mathematics are able to comfortably draw smooth curves or view three dimension figures more than others. Even with practice, some people cannot give the right appearance of the map of their courtly or even simple objects like a car. You will hear people being told that their hands are heavy that they cannot make a drawing while others withdraw from art courses because they find them hard. Art is therefore not for anyone who decides but to specific people who are gifted in that area.

Saltz advises how to be an artist from two perspectives. In one of the aspect, Saltz argues for listening to the work and challenges from other arts then advise people on how they can build form the struggles and become artists (Saltz par. 2). The idea does not hold because talented artists have unique ways of their arts which can only be improved through perfection. One cannot learn from other artists because their talents are exceptional. The way one person designs a house is not the same way another person can develop the same house or road. It, therefore, means that the advice given to make anyone an artist cannot work. They will only be a way of copying other people’s talents which is impossible. Saltz contradicts in the manifesto by claiming that people can learn from other artists while saying that people have their different paths. Art can therefore not be acquired by anyone but perfected by the talented.

In one of the advice, Saltz points out that it is good to imitate (Saltz par. 5). However, art is all about imagination. People cannot learn art by imitating or copying others as claimed by Saltz (Saltz par. 5). Through imitation, a person will not be able to come up with unique arts which define them as artists. There will be no imagination which means that when one learns art through imitation, they will never become real artists but copiers of other arts. Copying only makes another person do what others can do. Artists should only enhance their imaginations by exposing themselves to many new ideas, places, items, and readings. Without the ability to imagine beyond what people see, a person cannot claim to become an artist through learning. Art schools only perfect what people already know.

Saltz gives and advice on how to begin in becoming an artist and guides people through the process. However, those people who do art find themselves there loving it and doing it without following any instructions. They only decided to perfect in schools, and they should look for other experienced artists to help them fine-tune their skills. Saltz should, therefore, give advice based on the facts that people do not become artists, but they are born. Information should be on how to perfect art and not how to become one.
