Anti-Imperialism

I am strongly against imperialism since it is not always good for those involved. What is the use of extending our power to other people when we have our own country to rule and develop? When the British tried to extend their power to our nation, we fought very hard in the revolution war for freedom. With such an experience, I do not understand why we would want to do the same thing Britain did to us (Henretta et al, America. 638). It is agreeable that any country would fight back against imperialism and from the experience we have had in the past, this definitely would lead to death of many.

Our nation fought many wars in an attempt to fight for more land and resources. Though most of the soldiers died in these wars, those who really benefited were the rich who had the influence. The poor remained as they were. It makes no sense for our nation to use so many resources in an attempt to conquer lands that are far away from us either through diplomacy or through warfare. People in these lands also need them for survival and they need their freedom. In the period of expansion to the south, the native tribes living there were displaced to the unproductive regions (Henretta et al, America. 638). These are fellow Americans displacing fellow Americans just for land. If at this period these tribes could not agree with the settlers to coexist peacefully, how would other people who are far away from America coexist with American settlers in their own lands?

Response to Joel Chapman

Hi Joel, great line of thought over there, given that you as a fisher man have employed more than 100 people, I don’t see why we need more land or influence to people far away. This nation has many successful people who if they would be willing to help others through employments, the problem of unemployment and poverty would be long gone.  Why Britain tried to rule us, the revolution war emerged and many died. In my view, I don’t see why we as Americans we would want to see the same thing happen elsewhere. Imperialism comes with many negative effects.

Response to Sherrell Roberts

Hi Sherrell, nice work over there, I agree with you that there is no need to fight for more land when we really do not need it. Back when imperialism was real, people were fighting for more power, influence and resources but the rich benefited themselves with these resources. It was not about helping those other people but rather an attempt to benefit oneself. America was involved in many wars with other nations but the poor remained poor. If imperialism was to take place again, the same thing would happen.  The wealthy have a tendency of influencing everything that goes around.

Response to Abi Olowookere

Hi Abi, I like your argument as you support imperialism. If it is done to support civilization and spread liberty for all, it would be very effective. America is known to support liberty in other countries. However, from what has happened in the past, it is common for certain influential people to take advantage of this kind of support. In addition, when America decides to support another country, there is some interested invested there by some individuals. So a good idea of helping another country develops ends up benefiting a few foreigners. There is no need of a few using the nation’s resources for their own benefit.
