An Overview of Transportation

Transportation is the movement of people and goods between two locations using a variety of vehicles across different infrastructure systems. The military power and economic wealth of people or a country have been tied closely to effective and efficient transportation methods throughout history. The reason for this is because transportations allowed access to a country’s natural resources, therefore, promoting trade as well as the accumulation of wealth and power. During wars, effective transport systems provided the movement of soldiers, supplies, and pieces of equipment. The rapid movement of soldiers and their supplies was a critical factor in determining the fate of the war.

In the modern world, Transportation has played an essential role in the development of society, especially concerning improving trade routes and harbors as well as land- and air-based systems. It is the responsibility of transportation engineers to plan, design, build, operate and maintain these systems of transport. These roles ensure that there is a safe, convenient and efficient movement of people and goods. Transportation systems have a significant influence on how and where people live. An efficient transportation system allows for expansion of a population throughout a territory in a country and enables the people to live comfortably in remote areas far from farms and factories. The expansion and growth of a country are directly related to the transportation means at that specific time (Vadali 145).

Various transport Professional activities range from the design of road and transit system as well as operation at an urban scale to seaway, railway, and airport. Other activities include the location of a transport system, construction, and operation at a regional and national level. Transportation also offers employment opportunities to both the public and private sectors. The complementary technical program and the undergraduate core often provides a solid ground in transportation engineering necessary for the related professional employment  Transport also plays a vital role in the economy of a country. An effective transport system reduces the cost of moving natural resources from their points of extraction to production sites and transporting the finished goods to the markets. This plays a crucial role in the economic competition of a country (Vadali 145).

The transportation industry is one of the largest in the world. It consists of manufacturing and distribution of vehicles to fuel production and distribution as well as establishing transportation services. The automobile transport system can be divided into the planning and design of the conventional highway and the traffic control systems area. In most cases, transportation engineers have to deal with the challenge of developing major terminals and network links to satisfy the demands of transportation (Vadali 145). They have to develop these terminals and connections with due regard to the resultant environmental and land-use as well as other impacts of these transport systems.

Transportation is generally categorized by the medium in which the movement occurs. These media include land, water, air, and pipeline. Land transportation is the most dormant form of transportation around the world.  This is because using the road is generally convenient. Vehicles using the road can access almost anywhere, whereas most the other modes of transport are limited. They are also flexible. Vehicles have no time restriction. However, it has several disadvantages such as high construction and maintenance costs .constructing highways are more expensive than constructing rail. Sometimes roads are unreliable – challenges such as traffic jams, breakdowns and accidents might be very inconveniencing. The road conditions determine the efficiency of the roads. Bad road conditions may lead to problems such as delays. These delays make road transport unsuitable for carrying long distance goods.
