The Thunder child’s “A Winter of Hardship”  can be defined as having an irresistible lure that helps capture both the attention and imagination of the audiences. It offers a highlight of a young man’s word that is full of uncertainty and lacking. The main character faces many problems such as the lack of meals and other necessities. While life is not easy, the story indicates that there are huge prospects for those who do not give up. Despite the triumphant times, there is the indication that persistence and holding to dreams can help overcome the challenges. The author highlights the brutal nature of the young man’s experiences as he has to continuous move across the Saskatchewan and faces the brutal winter.

The part is widely known as being extremely cold and there are few chances of survival.  While there is dependent on natural food, it becomes evident that the preferred food “buffalo” was not forthcoming.  The reference to the scarcity of food illustrates that life comes with moments of abundance and scarcity. The situation of the family becomes worse prompting them to kill some of their animal companies for survival.  Despite the many problems, the family as a brick-wall resolution to continue with the journey and do not give in to tiredness or hunger.

The story can be defined as having the effect of illustrating the propelling role of dreams in human beings. After finding meat, the men realize that they were tired and could not manage to get the meat. The events prompted the need to send women who are viewed as having more strength to collect the food. The women are painted as playing an important role in the journey as they carry most of the loads and aids the men in other activities such as searching for food. In page fourteen, it is the young man’s aunt who notes that there is an old male buffalo. There are thus seen as playing ether ole of supplementing the role of men in guiding the tribe (Thunder child, 1).

After the buffalo disappears, the men are unable to follow its trail as they are weak. However, it is the women who take the gun and decide to follow the buffalo. At night, the women came back dragging a load of meats thus indicating that they had saved the tribe from starvation. In a second instance, the women find the head of a buffalo head in the snow and prepare it for the family. They are also seen as having contributed to the attainment of the dream of the narrator. He thanks the spiriting for having guided the women to finding food. The onset of spring also signals the change. Unlike the widely held view that women are weak, the narration indicates that there are strong and contributes to the wellbeing of society.

Buffalo meat is a metaphor that is used to refer to the dream of the tribe. They have great raged for buffalo meat and are happy when they find an old buffalo and ahead in the snow. After the narrator tells his father that they would have a better meal after finding loads of buffalo meat, his father responds that “dreams count, my son….the spirits have pitied us and guided us”. The dream indicates that determination and perseverance can contribute towards the attainment of goals. Despite being tired, the narrator’s brother pursued as shot the buffalo. On the other hand, it is the women who took an active role in finding the shoot buffalo (Thunder child, 2).

After going through many struggles, the tribe finds a load of meat which acts as a relief and an assurance that their ordeals were almost over. It is worth mojito that the finding of abundant food corresponds with the spring thus marking a shift from winter and suffering. It is an indication that life comes with moments of both abundance and scarcity. Nonetheless, remaining strong can help one to overcome these moments.
