The three book reviews written by Guillermoprieto about the personal life of Fidel Castro are interesting and sobering. They can make an individual change a perspective towards Fidel Castro, a leader you thought was terrible.
Gillermoprieto account sounds different from the Fidel Castro that I previously knew. In her reviews, she talks about all the positive things that Fidel did; he was loved by everyone, and was at the center of every individual heart and thought[1]. She also talks about how Fidel helped in facilitating a revolution in African countries such as Angola and South Africa among many more. His determination was always to promote perfect equality and perfect justice across the world, and that was the reason why he introduced socialism in Cuba.
Fidel Castro is a familiar person to me; however, I only knew about the negative view of him. I just knew him as a guerrilla leader, dictator, and an unrepentant revolutionary. I also knew him as a manipulative demagogue, an oppressor and a relentless persecutor of those who dared challenge his will and a violator of human rights.
Guillermoprieto’s review has changed the way I viewed the late Cuban leader, Fidel Castro. The report has helped me understand that despite the few negative sides that I knew about him, Fidel had many more positive views and good things. In short, he was a good leader. He promoted the political reunification of Latin America, and also enhanced 100% literacy level among the Cuban population[2]. His other great achievement that I learned from this review is that despite the many years of US embargoes on Cuba, Castro enhanced social, economic survival in his country Cuba. He was also a humble man who usually sent a medical mission to the affected areas in the third world. Fidel also promoted free, universal and quality education and health not only to the people of Cuba but also international students[3]. Guillermoprieto’s review has changed how I knew about this man; it has helped me to see the positive side of the late Fidel Castro.
