Music has transformed the lives of many artists and audience. It is an art and cultural activity that artists perform with instruments and vocal techniques. Michele Castro is a Brazilian singer, composer, and guitarist who discovered a passion for music. Besides being a singer, Michele Castro participates in cultural productions and research (“Michele Castro” n.p). She has done outstanding projects on culture, research, and urban intervention. Moreover, she initiated an event called D’SlumBrante with the primary objective of supporting artists from the marginalized area. Michele Castro’s first international play was a performance in two tours of Germany. Currently, Michele is known for the production of Brazilian music that values her culture and native country (“Michele Castro” n.p). The concert report encompasses an event presented by Arts & Letters and World Music Concert Series. The performance in the concert featured a famous Brazilian singer/guitarist Michele Castro.

On Thursday, April 7, 2016, I attended a music concert at Community Room at Front Range Community College. The concert was free, and everyone was welcomed to attend and see how the Brazilian singer played the guitar. The event started at 12:30 pm and ended at 2:00 pm. After attending the event, everyone came out fascinated since Michele Castro was an outstanding singer/guitarist. She brought her culture and native Rio style of music Front Range Community College by performing solo on a guitar. Michele’s vocal repertoire included Brazilian pop and rock, Choro, Samba, Bossa Nova, Forro and Musica popular Brasileira (MPB). Michele Castro was also good at the variety of Brazilian percussion instruments.

The bossa nova song style was played with gentler vocals and was soft. Michele Castro tried to introduce a more intimate style that accompanied the sound of the nylon-string classical guitar. It was interesting seeing Michele Castro move her fingers up and down the classical guitar with an underlying rhythm. When she played bossa nova on the guitar, she used a simple one-bar pattern. Besides, her thumbs played the bass notes on one and two notes. On the other hand, the samba song style was more up-tempo, and upbeat lyrics accompanied it.

Also, I was able to get a glimpse of the rhythm of choro and forro. I came to understand that choro was first created in the 19th century, and it was the first Brazilian urban music genre produced. Therefore, it is referred to as the father of samba and grandfather of bossa nova (MacGowan and Ricardo 55). Michele Castor performed the song style using the 7string guitar and some Brazilian percussions instruments. Choro is purely an instrumental style of music and Michele Castro demonstrated it by showing her sheer love of playing. The music had large leaps in its melody. Similarly, people who were very keen to listen could quickly notice the dizzying speeds and abrupt changes of harmony in the music. The sound looked improvised.

In conclusion, the event ended on time, and everyone who was present could testify that the performance by Michele Castro was beautiful and encouraging. Michele Castro performance featured her songs in her native language. She is a kind of a person you can learn a lot of things. Besides, she is proud of her career and cultural heritage. Michele Castro came to Front Range Community College for a music event to share her Brazilian culture and music with the public.
